Karst topography

The Karst is the name given to the landscape above the Bay of Trieste up to the Alps.
Karst topography is known for underground rivers and caves. In fact the Karst landscape abounds in karst phenomena, such as swallow-holes with their disappearing streams, depressions in the land, and 15.000 caves, whose underground world is very rich in fauna (nowhere else in the world will you find an underground salamander “the human fish” Proteus anguinus). All geographical regions in the world which have karst phenomena are named after the Slovene Karst.

Of all the caves in Slovenia, those of Postojna attract the largest number of visitors: more than one million a year. Near Postojna the river enters the Postojna Cave (over 20 km long), a natural wonder of the subterranean world. This is one of the most beautiful underground caves open to visitors in Europe. The cave had 104 visitors in 1819. This figure rose to well over 10,000 in 1901, and to this day more than 35 million visitors have admired the unique beauty of this cave. To the public is permitted to visit 6 km of the cave of which 5 km with a train.
